Comment:

Here are a few quick reasons why PC-BSD will not implement something like
 this:

 1) That is the responsibility of the Desktop Environment (DE), to bundle
in applications that are designed to work in that environment (so KDE
utilities like ksnapshot and such are pre-installed in KDE only). Since
PC-BSD is desktop agnostic, choosing which DE's utilities and applications
are "the best" is really not our job.

 2) PC-BSD is not starting from the same standpoint as the Linux distro
mindset, where a "distro" is quite often just somebody else's opinion on
which applications should be pre-installed. PC-BSD strives to just be a
base system that allows ANY FreeBSD applications/utilities to be added
later to customize your system for your particular use case.

 3) PC-BSD is striving to make the base system smaller rather than larger.
This will make it easier to prevent base-system package conflicts, and
give the user much more control over their own system.

Instead, I am hoping to add a new "recommended applications" category in
the AppCafe where we can highlight different apps like the ones you
mention without forcing every system to have them installed. We just need
to work out a couple more details about how to send out additional
"repository" information through the pbi repo format, and then I can get
that additional info integrated into the AppCafe browser.
