Comment:

 Correct as I said it chose the wrong one.  Regardless though this is not a
 bug with PC-BSD, its a driver related issue which can only be resolved
 through FreeBSD.

 The driver's auto detection is just going to make it's best guess as to
 what sound channel you want to use.  Lets say you have a pretty nice
 desktop with optical out, speaker out, HDMI out, and headphone jacks on
 front and back they can all have different channels.  So say you set it to
 use channel one that is for your speakers but it keeps reverting when you
 save it to channel 4.  That could be a PC-BSD issue since the settings we
 are issuing via the GUI are not being saved properly.

 If you find it irritating that the driver is not selecting the right
 channel out of the box your only recourse would be to ask the FreeBSD guys
 who maintain the driver for you. Here is a link to their PR system.
