 Fresh install results in no sound ... speakers or headphones. Tried
 various sources including a straight-up mp3 file in kplayer.

 Hardware compatibility diagnostic on graphical installer showed:

 Detected hardware devices:
     Video driver: (intel)[[BR]]

     Video resolution: (1366x768)[[BR]]

     Ethernet device: (em0)[[BR]]

     Wifi device: (iwn0)[[BR]]

     Sound device: (pcm4)

 Live Ubuntu 12.04 LTS shows that hardware is working correctly.

 My machine: Lenovo T420, 4GB RAM, 1TB hard drive.

 Not sure of what component to assign to ... so used Misc.
