 the actual usb installer worked. it was the installed system on the laptop
 that messed up. I tried installing it with the dvd, and the installer
 booted up just fine and installed, but when I tried to boot off the disk,
 it gets to the point of activating the X server, when it reboots instead
 of succeeding.
