 I got 8.2 RC1 working perfectly.  You were right; it was the KDE 3d
 effects that caused the crash.  I booted in safe/VESA mode, disabled 3D
 effects and the indexer, and then restarted.  After restart, everything
 worked with fine with normal configuration.
 I would recommend having 3D effects OFF by default. I can not be the only
 person whose video card has a problem with this, and people will be put
 off by PC-BSD if their first experience is that of a system freeze.
