 Well, I've fixed the freetype error here in SVN, however that is most
 likely not causing the failure. We're going to be rolling 8.0-Final with
 the new xorg server 1.6.5 and related drivers. I'm hopeful that will
 correct this problem for you, since it sounds like a bug in the xorg
 driver stuff with your card.

 Once we release the final 8.0, give this another shot and report back if
 it does correct this issue.
