After all my disappointments with upgrading from PCBSD9.1-RC3 to
PCBSD9.1 (x86) (see earlier mails of mine), I decided to do a fresh
installation starting from the DVD image.
I have a Dell Latitude D610 with a Intel 915 graphics controller and a
1400x1050 screen size. See the pciconf output below. PCBSD runs on a
plugged-in USB HDD (320 GB WD3200MEW).
- The installation itself ran OK. But after the initial reboot, when the
X server gets configured, the system shows a black screen after
configuring (intel driver, 1400x1050, this is basically correct).
- The system does not halt nor reboot from the black screen, a hard
power off is necessary (pressing the power button some 15 secs).
- I "configured" the X server by taking over my earlier xorg.conf file
(from RC3) and deleting the necessary dot files (in /root, if I remember
correctly), so the system can now be started.
- Switching to virtual consoles, like CTL-ALT-F1 etc., results in a
blurred screen. Returning to X is not possible, the system hangs. A hard
power off is again necessary.
- The same thing happens when I log out or (try to) shut down - black
screen, then hard power off.
Needless to say that 9.0 and above all 8.x ran all OK, only 9.1 RELEASE
shows this behaviour.
- I run this system on a plugged in USB drive (320 GB WD3200MEW). During
startup, the system often blocks for seconds or minutes (incl. the
wallclock time on the desktop). This has happened with all PCBSD and
FreeBSD versions that I have tried in the past. It appears to me that
the USB HDD "chokes" and needs a long time to recover. Interestingly
enough, this happens only with *BSD, but running Linux off the USB HDD
works OK (yes, a bit slower that the built-in HDD, but never mind
that...). It therre a problem with the USB HDD driver? Could this be fixed?
