Hey guys I had experienced this also with a virtualbox installation I 
had done.   I'm pretty sure it was when i upgraded from RC2 to RC3 
though.  I asked Kris to have a look at it and so we changed the size of 
the virtual hard drive from 20 to 30 gigabytes and reinstalled the 
updates.  After reinstalling RC3 I had icons again. I can't be certain 
it wasn't just a fluke.  I'm not sure this relates, but it definitely 
sounded similar.
