[PC-BSD Testing] Export Warden or Tar?

Before I upgrade from 8.1 to 9, I need to save four jails.

Last time I did this I just exported them from the Warden to a .wdn file

Is it better/easier to just tar the directory and untar it in the upgraded system, or continue to use .wdn files?

I remember that creating a .wdn file takes hours and I end up with a file about 450 MB.
