[PC-BSD Testing] Can't mount USB card reader

Just bought a Sony USB-2 SD card reader/writer but the system (7.1.1) won't recognize it.  Plug-ins pop up shows two UFS volumes but Dolphin can't read it. Using a Sandisk 2GB SD card formatted by my Canon A720 camera, presumably as FAT16.

Dmesg says:

da3 at umass-sim0 bus 0 target 0 lun 3
da3: <Sony Card R/W  -MS 2.11> Removable Direct Access SCSI-0 device
da3: 40.000MB/s transfers
da3: 1886MB (3862528 512 byte sectors: 255H 63S/T 240C)

So, why doesn't this work then:

#mkdir /media/card
# mount -t msdosfs /dev/da3 /media/card

I get an error:

mount_msdosfs: /dev/da3: : Invalid argument
