I'm unable to run anything later that vanilla 1.3 because of HAL on the 
machines I've tried it on

I totally agree

BTW I can't find the download url for test iso's any more - could 
someone please post it? Thanks in advance

Yes. I have to reset it quite often when I change drive racks.
