Sorry I don't know for sure for PC-BSD or "trueos", but on FreeBSD just 
setting it in rc.conf is not complete. You would run "/etc/rc.d/hostname 
start" or reboot after changing rc.conf's hostname= setting. The recent 
hostname manpage also mentions this.
