I had the same problem with my IBM ThinkPad (lenovo) T43.  What I
ended up doing is buying a 4GB memory stick at WalMart for about $15
and going with the USB stick version - worked like a charm.

Probably not what you want, but a faster solution to your problem
(that's why I went with it).
